SISAL FIBRE

THE YUCUTAN OUTPUT. Manawatu llaxmillers will be interested to know that sisal fibre is produced in the Yucutan in very large quantities, and that, most of it is used to make hinder twine. For this reason it comes into competition with New Zealand hemp. For some years the State Government of Yucutan has tried to regulate the price of this fibre. The pool broke down some lime ago, after a stack of about 700,000 Imles had accumulated, a part .of which was stored in the Yucutan, and a part in the Un-ited-States.

The Cordage Journal, of November, whiqh is printed in New York, stifles: “Fluctuations in the market of Mexican sisal fibre during the current, year have culminated this month in a downward movement, which has this week carried the asking price for the Erie Corporation warehouse sisal down to the lowest figiu'e that has been quoted in nearly a quarter of a century, and very nearly to the lowest price at which sisal has ever sold.”

The Cordage Trade Journal has compiled the following market quotations from the hard fibre reports, which have appeared in its columns since 1890, the quotations being approximately the highest and lowest for each year:— Mexican sisal fibre quotation.

Highest. Lowest price price. Year. in cents: . in cents.

It- will he noted that there was a sharp rise in-. 1898. This was due to the war between the United States and Spain cutting .off supplies of Manila fibre from the Philippine Islands. This caused the renewal of the New Zealand flax industry, that has been more or less prosperous ever since.
