ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
A MAORI DROWNED. Gisborne, March 3. A Maori named Mata Kawa was drowned at the mouth of the Waiapu river yesterday. Deceased was' with a party with a fishing boat, >vhioh_got adrift, and in endeavouring to recover it, he lost his life. STATION-HAND SHOT. Gisborne, March 3. Richard Donald, aged 30, stationhand, was fatally shot yesterday at Paremata, near Tolago Bay. Deceased had visited a settler’s house and entered one of the rooms. The settler and another visitor were outside, and hearing a gunshot rushed in and found Donald dead -with a wound in the head, the shot having j evidently been fired from the gun in the room.
A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. Rotorua, March 3. A serious accident occurred at Ongaroto, a truck carrying matai logs being derailed, and two A. Given and E. Campbell, phased beneath the logs. Given was unconscious, and sent to King George Hospital in a commandeered ear, while the hospital ambulance bro- * iiglif'Campbell. The roads were terrible after the heavy rain. The extent of the men’s injuries has not yet been determined. Given is -a \widower <vith one child, and Campbell is a married man.
