Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, MARCH 4, 1922. DRUNKEN MOTOR DRIVERS.
A SHEEP-FARMER /of Hawke’s Bay, who ran down a six-year-old child while driving a motor car, and inflicted injuries that caused death, and who was found guilty of manslaughter, has been admitted to probation for. a period of three years. His Honour said he was satisfied that I hi* accused was drunk at the lime of the accident, when he failed to slop after knocking the child down. His Honour further stated that the jury’s recommendation for mercy had persuaded him to admit the prisoner to probation. The plea of drunkenness in mitigation of a crimo not proinoclit :\ tod may parry ><»mo weight in oortain rdmunstnncos, but the motor driver who. while under the influence of liquor, risks his’own and the lives of other people by driving a motor car, and is the cause of a mishap, is not entitled to favoured treatment. Subsequent remorse for something that could have been avoided is not a sufficient safeguard to the public safety, and the drunken motor driver should be dealt with in a more drastic manner limit has hitherto obtained. ■ ,
