BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At last night’s Borough Council meeting correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: —

From the Health Department, recommending that the services of the temporary health inspector for this borough be continued, to enable the house to house inspection to be finished. Or. Martin said lie would like to see the health inspector put a little more “ginger” into his work.

Or. Walker said that no doubt the health inspector was very busy at this time of the year. He would suggest that Mr MeKnight be permitted to carry on for a further period. It was decided that Mr MeKnight be permitted to act as temporary health inspector for a period of four weeks.

Or. Bryant voted against the mot ion.

From the Otago Hospital Board, asking the Council to protest against the increase of audit fees. Decided to support the Board in their objection.—Or. Coley voted aga nsi. From Mr d. H. Reid, offering to -(‘II sundry articles in connection with the Town Hall. Decided to purchase some of the art ides enumerated. Frmn the Health Department, stating that the present system of collecting rubbish in the borough was nut efficient, and recommending a weekly collection for the business area. Or. Coley said if they were going to have a weekly collection of rubbish suitable receptacles would be required for the people to place rubbish in.

Or. Martin said the best method would be to increase the road staff and use their own dray to do the collecting. The letter was received. WATER AND DRAINAGE.

ENGINEER'S REPORT.

“We have to report on the progress of i! e works on the water and drainage scheme .‘is follows: Water Tower: The contractor has put ill all the foundation, and now has the timber in position to begin concreting the walls. Septic Tank: The excavation for the tank is nearly complete, and concreting will commence next week. The centrifugal pump has been giving a cer : lain amount of trouble, but certain alterations were carried out. last Saturday afternoon, and the pump worked to-day in a most satisfactory manner. It will be necessary now to work the pump two shifts to keep the water down. Water Reticulation :The damaged water pipes are being repaired where necessary.”—Adopted. Cr. Bryant said that something would have to be done re the sarnT placed on Harbour Street from the -op!ic tank excavation. He suggested that the metal now being taken out of the excavation be used lo cover the sand.

ll was decided that the gravel taken from the septic tank excavation be spread on the roadway ii) Harbour Street where required, sufficient to make a good road.
