Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1922. MESSRS LEVIN AND CO.
THE destruction by fire oi’ Messrs Levin and Co.’s large stores early on Thursday morning is not only a disaster to the firm, hut a serious loss to Foxlon’s commercial and shipping interests. The firm lias important .business connections in this district, and its faith in Foxton as a distributing centre was exemplified by the expenditure of probably more capital in the way of buildings, plant and wharfage accommodation than would have been thought .just ilia bit* by other large commercial concerns. Its enterprise has in no small measure assisted Fox ton’s prosperity. Further, recognition must be. made of MessrLevin and Co.’s efforts to keep the port busy and revenue-producing in the way of shipping, and at the same time effecting a saving of thousands of pounds in freight to those engtiged in farming, business and industrial pursuits. In this connection the firm has not been actuated by monopolistic motives. Any such suggestion is quickly dispelled by a review of past and present commercial conditions. The firm /ms loyally stood by the port and district, ail'd shared its ups and downs, and should the recent disastrous set-back necessitate diminished active, interest,, the loss will be publicly fell and regretted. We have no indication' of what the firm’s future local policy may be, but it is to lie hoped that the Foxton business connection will not be prejudiced.
