USEFUL HINTS.
After milk has stood for some time be careful when pouring it out of the jug to leave a little at the bottom. It is often injurious to th* health to drink this portion of the milk.
If, when cleaning baby’s shoes with pipeclay, a little milk is used instead of water, the white will not rub off on your clothes when you carry him. When making hot starch, soapy water should always be used. This gives the necessary shine to the linen, and prevents any chance of the iron sticking to the surface of the article.
If you wish to cool anything very quickly, squeeze the blue bag into a vessel ofjjold water until it becomes quite dark in colour. Then add a handful of salt, and in this place your jug of lemonade, milk, blancmange, or jelly. It is a splendid substitute for ice. Don’t throw away the green leaves of celery. Wash and dry them on a plate in a warm oven, or on top of the stove, turning them frequently. Keep the leaves in a tightly covered tin box, and when celery is out of season this will prove a nice addition to soup, stews, and dressings. To avoid crushing blouses or jumpers by folding them, lay them perfectly flat on sheets of fairly stiff paper, and roll as you would a piece of music. White paper is preferable for delicate garments, but brown can be used tor anything dark.
To revive faded flowers, (ill a bowl with water that is almost boiling; into this place a lump of camphor about the size of a hazel nut, and put stalks in the hot solution. Move the howl to a cool dark place, and leave for half an hour. At the end of that time you will find that the flowers have revived wonderfully. Even quite old blooms can be made to look fresh in this manner.
