WATER AND DRAINAGE SCHEME.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. At Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council the water and drainage engineer’s report was read as follows: —

“We submit herewith plan and specifications for laying and jointing the eight and six inch water pipes, the contract to include labour only. We recommend that tenders be called for ihe work. We suggest that the work of reinstating the asphalt pavements be not incLuded, as this work could be done better and cheaper by your own outside staff. We have, however, included the work of laying the service connections from these mains to the boundary of the properties. We suggest that quotations for the cocks, the galvanised piping, and other fittings required for the services be obtained at once within New Zealand.

.“We propose to employ labour to repair the coating of the pipes that have been damaged in transit, and to deduct the cost of the work from inonev due to the contractors.

“The high lift water supply pump has arrived in Wellington, and we recommend that arrangements be made for its erection so that it can be utilised to test the jointing as the pipes are being laid. “Af'rer the six and eight inch pipes are laid a supply of water under 50 pounds pressure will be available for fire-fighting onee the gas engine is started up. The other two artesian wells should therefore be sunk without delay, and the four wells coupled up to the pump well.

“The contractor for the construction of the water tower is about to place the concrete in the foundations.

“Wo agree with the recommendation of the W.ater and Drainage

(’oinmillee that the Council fence the property adjoining the tower -he, and suitably plant if to prevent damage by high winds, etc. “Mr Read has not yet completed the excavation for the septic tank, arid lm> now got the pumping plant for unwatering the excavating in good working order. “With reference to our resident engineer, we have made arrangements with Mr G. W. King to relieve Mr Jas. Murray. .Mr King has had an extensive experience as engineer with the Public Works Department, the Raglan County Council, and other local bodies. We attach hereto a statement of his experiences. We have every confidence in his ability to supervise the construction of the works.”

Decided that, the report be adopted. and that tender* be called for reticulating, labour only, of Main Street, and portion of Union Street, with Sin. and Oin. water mains and service connections. Tenders to close on Saturday, I.lth‘March, at 12 noon.
