THE STRIKE AT MANGAHAO.
DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER On Monday the Minister for Public Works was waited upon by Messrs J. A. Nash and E. Newman, M’s.P., in reference to the strike of the tunnellers at Mangahao. The deputation contended that the Department should not make the cut operative over the total cost per chain, including explosives. The Minister said he would communicate at- once with Mangahao and give the deputation a reply on Tuesday.
THE MINISTER’S REPLY. Messrs .T. A. Nash and E. Newman, M’s.P., have been informed by the lion. J. 0. Coates, Minister for Public Works, that the cut in connection with the tunnel work at Mangahao does not apply to explosives. The Minister has been led to understand that the tunnels where affected have been declared black, and that the men have made fresh demands, viz., explosives-at halfprice, sharpening of all tools free, also carbide and grease free. The Minister states that he hopes matters will be quickly straightened out, and that shortly he will be able to announce that work is proceeding in full swing.
