A MARRIAGE PUZZLE.
A Tottenham couple cannot agree whether they are married to each other or not. The man, Melville Friedlander, says they are, but the woman, who gave her name as Ives, says they are not. They laid the matter before the Tottenham Bendh, but the justices'declined to attempt a solution of the puzzle. Friedlander said he was a Jew, but the woman was not. They were married according to the Jewish custom, but the wedding was not followed by a ceremony under any other /religion. They had lived together 1 ' for 19 years, and there were two children. The woman declared emphatically that she was not Mrs Friedlander. “He has tried fib make me believe that I was married to him according to the Jewish religion,” she added, Leonard Osborn, who was summoned for assaulting Friedlander, said he had*been given to understand that the woman was not Mrs Friedlander. He had lived with her, and had known her by the name-of Ives. Osborn was fined 10s. Friedlander sat throughout the proceedings with a Bible before him opened at the Book of Deuteronomy.
