MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Ma nawatu County Council was held oj Monday, at Sanson. Present: Si James Wilson (chairman), Crs. H E. Fagan, W. E. Barber, J. Boyec and IL H. Hunt. COBIiESPONDENCE. Correspondence was dealt witl as follows: — From Bailway- Department, for warding paid-on charges for tram £-47 10s 5d. —Beceived. From the Public Trustee,*forwarding voucher for £7,89714s lOd the final instalment on the council’s loan of £30,000. —Received. From Foxton Chamber of Commerce, drawing attention to the bac state of Beach road, which was prejudicing the beach, as the taxi fares had been raised on account of tire state of the road. —The engineei said 1 that there was metal on tht spot ready to be put on the road. It was decided that Cr. Barber confer with the chamber in the meantime. The council, it was stated, was willing to subsidise voluntary contributions, as suggested by the ) Chamber. From Mr J. L. Mudford, complaining of the loss of three cases of motor-spirit, which he claimed were put off the tram without him being notified. He claimed £4 11s fid. It was stated that the cases had been left on a siding to be called for. The chairman said that the Government would not take responsibility, and the Council should be in ! the same position. { It was decided that consignees be 1 informed that the Council could not 1 accept the responsibility for the 1 goods stolen. I- From Glen Oroua Dairy Company, ! complaining of a short delivery of four boxes of whey butter. The clerk said that the goods were under lock and key all the time they were on the tramline, so the loss could not have occurred there. From Mr E. Newman, M.P., stating that he had received a letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs, to say that no remission can be made of the duty on cement imported for local bodies. —Beceived. From Mr E. Newman, M.P., stating that he would urge Parliament that a grant be made for the raising of the Bangiotu road. —Beceived. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Awaliou Biding.—He had completed the trimming and grading of the Whirokino road and No. fi Line, and also a portion of Kari Kari road, and arranged to cart 100 yds. of metal to the Whirokino road. Tramway. —He had erected a windmill, pump and tanks at Oroua Downs siding, and a'first-class supply of water was availavle for the tram engines. The Sanson curve had been adjusted and each joint fastened down with bed-plates and coach-screws. A small consignment of silver pine sleepers had come to hand, and a further length of 401 b. rails would be laid during the present week. During last month he had made an experiment on a length of tramline with weed destroyer. The cost worked out at 2s fid per chain, and from observations made it would be necessary to make several applications during the season, and even then the mixture would not destroy the roots completely. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT The tramway manager reported that accounts showed a credit balance of £l2l 3s 3d on the month’s working. The chief items of traffic were: Merchandise 94 tons, cheese and butter 2191- tons, fis trucks of stock, 970 cubic yards of metal, 21,900 super, feet of timber. Fares amounted to £23 5s fid. Special trams to the Foxton races brought in £2O Is fid. An Auckland linn had imptired into the sale of tiie ioc-i.molire ‘‘Rangiiikei.'’ which was under oiler.
