CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The adjourned monthly meeting of the Council of the Chamber was held on Thursday night. Present} Messrs Hornblow (president), Admore, Christie, Moorhouse, F. D. Whiblev, Rev. Walton, and Perreau. The resignation of Mr W. Hart as a member of the Chamber was received with regret. HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER BOARD.
The question of representation oh the Horowhenua- Hydro-Electric Power Board was mentioned by the Chairman. He said the supply of electric current for power and lighting, to this district had an important bearing on industrial prosperity. He hoped that men of business ability would be elected as local and district representatives. One member of the Chamber (Mr Whibley) had signified his intention of offering his services, and so far this was the only nominee mentioned. It was pointed out that Foxton was entitled to one representative, and the adjoining ward of the County one representative. No action was taken. BEACH ROAD. The bad state of the Beach road was mentioned by Mr Perreau, who asked whether _the Beach residents could not constitute themselves into a governing body, or apply for a toll gate. The road was so bad that motorists did not care to travel over it, and taxi drivers had increased fares for passengers. He also asked whether any arrangements had been made to convey school children from the Beach to the school.
The President, in reply, said the population at the seaside would not justify the creation of a Town Board. The road maintenance yas £T charge on the Awahou Riding, although it was used principally by people outside the riding, who did not contribute to its upkeep. He did not think a toll gate would be sanctioned.-
Mr Whibley objected that a toll gate would not be in the interests of the seaside.
The Chairman said that possibly the County -would subsidise voluntary contributions, to improve the road. *
Mr Perreau said the residents had been subsidised 5s in the £ by the County on a road deviation to avoid the cutting. The President said a further letter on the subject, could.be written ‘to the County Council, and also t.o the Borough Council, asking the latter body to use its efforts to bring about an improvement. In respect to conveying school children from the Beach, the School Committee had received two offers, which had been forwarded to the Education Board to deal with. It was resolved to write the County Council and Borough Council as suggested. THE PORT. It was resolved to invite the Palmerston Chamber to meet the local Chamber in reference to a conference on matters of interest to the port, and to fix a date v for such meeting; also to invite the Harbour Board representatives to be present.
