RACING

FOXTON R.C. MEETING. . The Fox ton Racing Club was favoured with ideal weather conditions for their annual race meeting on Saturday and Monday. There was a fairly good attendance on Saturday, and on Monday, being a holiday, a very large crowd was present, visitors being in attendance from all parts of the Island. The Foxton Club’s meeting is always a popular one with owners, trainers and sportsmen generally, it being considered one of the best managed country meetings in the Dominion. From a picnic point of view, the grounds are ideal, and a large number of people who do not frequently attend race meetings make the Foxtoil meeting their annual outing on this account.

The racing throughout the. meeting was interesting, some very fine finishes taking place. The chief event, the Foxton Cup, was won by Ngata (owned by Mr James Bull), the winner being ridden by B. H. Morris. This is the second occasion on which Mr Bull has been successful in this event, winning it previously with All Over, three years ago. The chief sprint event on the first day went to that great weight carrier, Waimatao, who won on the bit, carrying 9st. 71b. The President’s Handicap on the second day was won by the well-bred but disappointing mare, Moutoa Ivanova, who was leased from the owner, Mr F. S. Easton, a few months ago by Mr D. McCauley. The starting was in the capable hands of Mr Angus Keith. A pleasing feature of the meeting was the manner in which the races were got off to time, particularly on the second day. The whole meeting went off without a hitch of any kind, and the secretary (Mr Freeman)

and officials are to be congratulated on the manner in which the meeting was managed. At the conclusion of the race for the Cup, the rider of the winner was presented with a gold-mounted whip by Mrs Kirkland. As has been the experience of all Club’s this season, the totalisator figures showed a big shrinkage. On the first day £18,410 was handled, and on the second £21,477, making a total for the two days of £30,887, a shrinkage of £28,844 when compared with last year. The figures last year were: First day £30,530, second day £32,105. The following are the details of the racing: POROUTAWHAO HACK HURDLES, of 150 sovs; one and three-quarter miles. 4 Mr A. Along the back, Bairnsdale was a length ahead of Opiate and Te Maire, with Pariform moving up from the rear. Going to the turn, Bairnsdale lost the lead, and Opiate led into the straight, followed by Te Maire, Battle Song and Pariform, the latter going up fast. At the distance Pariform had run into the load, and thence on had only to be kept going to win. Bairnsdale was fourth.

Correspondent was sent out favourite in the Himatangi Hack, but Ania, Princess Fran, Petunia, and the coupled horses were also well supported. At the turn into the straight most of the field was bunched, but at the distance Princess Fran, Petunia and In the Pink had the race to themselves, the first named winning by half a length. As was anticipated, Ngata was made a good favourite for the Cup, and fully justified the confidence reposed in him. American Beauty led the field from the start, and remained there until the last fifty yards. At first she was attended by Moutoa Ivanova, but Sasanof’s sister cried enough after a mile had been covered. Rounding the bend into the straight, Kilrush and Ngata were behind American Beauty, and in a good race up the straight Ngata overhauled the leader, and won by half a length, Kilrush failing by a head to reach American Beauty. In the Maiden Race the only horses that at any time looked like having any say in the finish were Roset, Pantler, Rada, Communicate, Demoness and Jonquil. It was a good finish, Roset winning by a neck, with the third horse half a length away.

Demades was smartest away in (he Awaliou Hack Welter, Goolwa and Warrawee next, and in that order they ran to the turn into the straight, where Goolwa compounded, Warrawee going on to catch Demades. In the home run, La Paloma and Pitch Dark put in their claims for supremacy, hut Warrawee proved equal to the challenge, and stalled off the attempt to deprive him of the lead. Misslove was badly left at the start.

In the Anniversary Handicap Waimatao was backed down to under even money, and the result proved that the public’s judgment was good, for when the Bezonian gelding put in his run at the business end of the race there was nothing else in it, there being a good length’s daylight between him and Tommy Rot at the winning post. Deucalion carried practically half the money on the machine in the Marotiri Hack Handicap. He was handy all through, and had no dif-. ficulty in accounting for the opposition at the finish. Some Red, who finished second, was the outsider of the field.

A field of eight contested the Her-

I'ington Welter, Ruatara being fav- , Probate was also well Bonny Briar was promifor four -furlongs, but then faded away. Malingerer started slowly, but with a fast run at the finish got up into fourth position. SECOND DAY. PAIAKA HACK HURDLES. A 1J miles and 100 yards; of 150 sovs. 3 Mr A. Bairnsdale, who on the first day was only backed to the extent of 19 tickets, was sent out a slightly better favourite than Battlesong. From the barrier Gold Problem, Rowan, and Bairnsdale led the field, and this order continued past the stand, where Pariform was in fourth position, and Te Maire fifth. Battle Song came through turning out of the straight, and at the back Pariform took the lead, closely attended by Rowan and Battlesong, Gold Problem and Bairnsdale crying enough. Pariform led the field into the straight, and won by half a length, the same distance separating second and third. Te Maire was a neck away fourth, and there was a gap of ten lengths between him and the rest of the field. The second event saw another of the first day’s winners again successful, Deucalion, after piloting the field practically throughout the journey, having no difficulty in passing the post two lengths in front of Princess Fran. In the Pink was fourth, Lord Usk fifth. Morzonia got away very badly. The President’s Handicap was a runaway victory for the locally owned and trained Moutoa Ivanova, who finished a good three lengths ahead of Ngata, with the jockey looking l’ound. American Beauty hopped out from the barrier at a great pace, and led the field for three furlongs, followed by Probate and War Baby, Kilrush bringing up the rear. At the back Moutoa Ivanova took control, and, leading into the straight, never looked like being overhauled. Ngata, who was backed down to well under even money, made a good run in the straight, but could make no impression on the winner. Probate was fourth, War Baby fifth, and American Beauty last.

In thc_ Maiden Jonquil was left. The field was fairly well bunched on coming into the straight. Satin made a late run, and got up just in time to beat Pleasure by a short head, Demoness being a neck away third. Satin was only supported to the extent of 43 tickets, and returned his supporters almost a third of a century.

Muraahi was the only withdrawal from the Carnarvon Hack Welter, leaving a field of seven, of which Warrawee was made a good favourite. Penalty was first out, and led the field for three furlongs, with Pitch Dark second. Pitch Dark then took command, and led into the straight. March On put in a challenge, but. Pitch Dark lasted long enough to win by a head, Rada being a length further back. Warrawee was fourth.

The Wharnngi Handicap was contested by the smallest field of the meeting, only four runners facing the starter. Although Waimatao had the steadier of 10.8, he was sent out favourite. Velocifonn got all the worst of the start. Tommy Rot was first prominent, followed by Ruatara, with Waimatao third and Velociform last. At the bend, Velocifonn came through into second place, and the position was unaltered entering the straight. In the straight Waimatao got on to Velociform’s heels, and came down on to his knees, dislodging Morris. There was a good finish between Tommy Rot and Ruatara, the former getting the verdict by a neck. Velociform was a length further back.

Five horses contested the Apprentices’ Hack Handicap, La Paloma being sent out favourite. Mystico made the pace fast at the start, but after traversing three furlongs Muraahi took command, and was never headed, winning by two lengths. La Paloma was fourth. The concluding event, the Moutoa Welter, was the best betting race of the meeting, the machine handling over £3,500. Moutoa Ivanova, who won the President’s Handicap earlier in the day, incurred a penalty of 101bs., and carried 8.11. The finish between the placed horses was the 'best of the meeting, inches separating them. Barleycorn beat Moutoa Ivanova by a head, and Simon, who came with a great rattle, just failed by a nose to reach Moutoa Ivanova.
