THE HEMP INDUSTRY.

DECEMBER GRADING RETURNS

The following returns for the grading of hemp, tow and stripperslips for the month of November has been issued by the Department of Agriculture:— Hemp.—The total number of bales graded was 7,193, as compared with 8,732 for the corresponding period of last year ,a decrease of 1,539 bales. Tow. —During the month 1,832 bales were graded, as compared with 1,978 for the corresponding period of last year, a decrease of 146 bales. The detailed particulars of the grading of hemp at each port was as follows: —

Dunedin Lyttelton Twenty-nine bales at Auckland, 28 bales at Foxton, and 106 bales at Wellington were rejected. No bales were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the.corresponding period of last year being given in parentheses: — Fine 58 (51), good fair 1,617 (1,477), high fair 4,154 (3,379), fair 1,067 (3,386), common 134 (330), rejected 163 (109), condemned nil (nil). The number of bales graded at each port was as follows: —Auckland 1,385, Foxton 1,323, Wellington 3,412, Blenheim 176, Picton 96, Wairoa 208, Bluff 334, Dunedin 16S, Lyttelton 89. The following are the details of the tow graded:—

Two bales at Auckland, 19 bales at Wellington, and 67 bales at the Bluff were condemned. The number of bales in each grade was as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parentheses: — First Grade 840 (473), 2nd grade 775 (1,292), 3rd grade 129 (108), condemned 88 (33). The number of bales graded at each port was as follows: —Auckland 327, Foxton 370, Wellington 699, Blenheim 53, Picton 45, Wairoa 48, Bluff 248, Dunedin 12, Lyttelton 30. Stripper-slips. —Seventy-two bales from Wellington were graded No. 1 grade.
