MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held on Wednesday, Cr. W. E. Barber presiding in the absence of the chairman (Sir James Wilson). There were also present Councillors H. H. Hunt, J. Boyce, W. S. Penny, 11. J. Fagan and M. Hammond. CORRESPONDENCE. From C. A. Spring, Moutoa, asking that the council undertake the work of metalling Spring’s road.— It. was decided to approach the ratepayers concerned with a view lo their petitioning the council for the creation of a special rating area to finance the work which, it was estimated, would cost about £SOO. From the Department of Health, drawing attention to the insanitary condition of premises on Lee’s Line. Feilding. —Steps to be taken to abate the alleged nuisance. From the Acting-Minister of Railways, intimating that the council’s resolution urging that a revision of railway tariff rates *?>e undertaken without delay in order to cope with the carriage of benzine and other freight by motor-lorries,-was at present receiving the careful attention of the department.
From the Stratford County Council, forwarding a resolution asking the Government to remit the duty on cement for local bodies.—Endorsed. From the Selwyn and Ashley County Councils, expressing disapproval of calculating the hospital levy on capital values only, and urging that it should be assessed on both, population and capital value. —Approved and left in the hands of the chairman.
ALTERATIONS TO RATE ROLLS. The following alterations were made to the rate rolls:- —11. P. Green to T. IT. Green, see. 53P, XV., Rangitoto; E. G. Drew to E. Wilcox, section 342, .'Sanson; J. C. and IT. McCntchcon to J. and A. Taylor, pt. 32 secs. 178-9, Carnarvon, ENGINEER’S REPORT.
The engineer reported as follows: —ln the Awahou Riding the grader hiis been employed trimming up the various roads during the past month. As requested by Cr. Barber, I have taken out the cost of maintenance of the - five miles of road between Ilinmtangi and the Foxton borough boundary, which works out approximately at £4O per mile.
As to the tramway,'we have now completed the relaying of 4011). rails to a few chains on the south side of Mr F. Robinson’s gate, and as there arc no sleepers available for the work, the plate laying is held up for the time being. The gang is now employed adjusting the Salmon curve, which is very much out of 'order. The work of erecting a windmill, primp and tanks at Orona Downs siding is being proceeded, with, and will lie completed in a few days’ time. The concrete culvert under the tramline opposite.Mr Grace’s has been completed, tlm old wooden structure removed, and the g.ap filled in with clay arid metal to the level of the line. A new channel is being constructed through Mr Grace’s property to facilitate the discharge of storm water and prevent the flooding of the road.
