STABLES DESTROYED BY FIRE.

RACE HORSES’ NARROW ■ ESCAPE. After a long spell, Foxton was again aroused,to the sound of the fire siren, at an early hour yesterday morning. Mr A. Walls, on looking out of his window at about one o’clock, noticed a glare in the direction of Avenue Road, and immediately gave the alarm'. The Brigade was soon on the scene of the. conflagration, which was discovered to be Mr Setter’s stables in Avenue Road. When the Brigade arrived the fire had a good hold, and it was impossible to save any portion of the building or contents, so the Brigade concentrated on that portion of the stables nearest the house - , which was then in danger of catching. After threequarters of an hour’s hard work the fire was got under. The stables were being used by Mr D. McCauley, horse trainer, and were occupied by three race horses. Mr McCauley and others had little time to get the horses out. Mr Setter was the first to notice the outbreak, a few minutes before one o’clock,, the -fire then having a good hold. The cause of the outbreak is a mystery. Mr McCauley was not a loser, other than By.the inconvenience caused by the destruction of - the stables.

The insurances on the buildings are £2OO on the stables, and £SO on the feed-shed, both in the Standard Office. -
