The fortnightly meeting of flic local Borough Council will he held at 7.30 p.m. on Monday next. The C. M. Ross Coy.’s premises will he closed all day Monday, 9th inst., for. the purpose of removing stocks from temporary premises.
The Rev. and Mrs Halliday left Foxton yesterday for Christchurch, where they will spend a short holidav.
The total rainfall for Fox ton durino- the 12 months ending December .list was 30 inches. Rain fell on llti days during the year.
A consignment of water pipes have arrived, and are being distributed around the borough, prior to the work of laying them being commenced.
C'r. F. D. Whibloy informs us that he will be a candidate for a seat on the Horowhenun Hydro-Electric Hoard, as a representative of the Borough of Foxton. An election will lake place early next month.
Air .John Ogilvy, an old and respected resident of Masterton, died at an early hour on Thursday morning, at Ihe age of seventy years. The deceased was one of the best .'judges, of fat slock in the Dominion. He leaves three sons, one of whom is Mr Don Ogilvy, of Foxton.
1 1 would be in the interests of public safely if an example were made of one or two reckless motor car and motor cycle drivers, who seem to think that the main thoroughfare is a line surface for a high turn of speed. If the practice is not stopped some one will be either seriously injured or killed.
The funeral of the late Mrs Withers and her infant daughter took place yesterday afternoon. The Rev. Thomas Ilallidny conducted a short, and impressive service at the deceased’s parents’ (Mr and Mrs Jno. Ross) residence prior to the cortege moving on, and again at the graveside. The casket was covered with beautiful Horai tributes. The funeral was attended by a large number of residents, the pall bearers being members of the local Oddfellows’ Lodge, of which deceased’s husband is a member. Messages of condolence from all parts of the Dominion have been received by the bereaved husband and parents of deceased.

An Ashburton telegram says: — Through a motor cycle and side-car capsizing near Met liven on Thursday evening, Norman Reid Kingston, aged nineteen months, was killed. The father, Stanley Kingston, was riding >lllO cycle, and the child was sitting on his mother’s knee in the chair. The father and mother received minor injuries.
The aeroplane that passed over Foxton about 9.30 last evening, on its way back to Wellington from Wanganui, struck a. wire fence at the Lyall Bay aerodrome, and toppled over. Pilot Mallard sustained a slight cut on Ihe mouth, but neither of the two passengers were injured. The undercarriage of the bi-plane was torn off, and the propeller broken.
A smart capture was made by the Palmerston police on Thursday, involving the seizure of seven tins of opium. On the arrival of the Auckland express the police searched the personal effects of three Chinese passengers, and discovered the opium secreted in a bundle of soiled linen in the portmanteau of Wong Yin, an Auckland laundryman, who was travelling to Wellington. Yin was brought before the Court, and remanded to Monday. Bail in the sum of £2OO was allowed.
“I'm not a loefulaler, but 1 am of the opinion that the law should provide a sentence of six months’ imprisonment without the option of a fine, on any person who attempts to drive a motor car while under (he influence of liquor,” was the, opinion of a motorist expressed to a “Heraldw representative. He added that several narrow escapes from collisions he had known were the result of reckless drivers primed with I if I nor. Fifty swarms of bees in full profit. in two- and three-decker hives, are advertised for sale.
