TOTALISATOR RETURNS.

From December up to the 4th of January, the totalisator figures of the various race and trotting meetings held throughout the Dominion, no"less a sum of money than £1,957881 was put through the machine. Of this total, racing accounted for £1,464,889 10s, and trotting £522,991 10s. Last year, for tAe similar period, £2,351,300 10s was registered, the proportion being: Racing £1,805,451 10s, trotting £545,849. In view of the present financial stringenby it was natural that clubs should* record decreased returns this year, hut in several cases there has been an actual increase. In the latter category are Taka puna, Greymouth (two days only), Westland and Porangahau. - In the case of the last named, the races were this year held at Waipukurau, hence the increase.

The Auckland Trotting Club was the *only concern of this branch of sport to show larger totalisator figures over last year. It has to be remembered that the money is circulating all the time, and does not represent a fixed sum.

The increase in the Government tax on stakes and dividends, passed during the present session of Parliament, operated throughout the recent carnival, hut the increase in the amusement tax did not come into force until January Ist. The result of the increases is that the Government will reap a substantial sum. Detailed figures arc: — RACING. 1920-21. 1921-22. £ £
