ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
CRAZY MAN’S ACT. THROAT ‘CUT WITH BROKEN BOTTLE. Auckland, Jan. 4. A middle-aged man, John Carmody, was admitted to hospital today with his throat cut, and was at once taken to the operating room to have his wounds stitched up-. The ease is one of attempted suicide. Carmody appeared before the; court this morning on u charge~of vagrancy, he having been found by night- on the enclosed premises of St. Helens hospital, where he-had greatly frightened some of-the in- ■ mates. He was convicted and sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. Seemingly he was a half-craved individual suffering from the effects of drink, and soon after being sent-, enced he seized an opportunity tejcreep' o.ut of the prisoners’ room and), make a dash for the courthouse \ door. He was promptly secured and returned tp*the room. v ' The unhappy sequel occurred soon after the prisoner’s arrival at Mount’Eden gaol, where he appar- ' enfcly got possession of a broken bottle and attempted to end his life by; cutting^his throat. It is understood that the injuries are of a very dangerous nature. i * ’N
