THE PORT OF FOXTON
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER
A deputation consisting of Messrs j/ A.- Nash, M.P., and J. Chrystnll, representing the Foxton Harbour Board, waited upon the Minister for Marine (the Hon. Sir F. D. Bell), at Wellington on Thursday, and were introduced by Mr Ed. Newman, DIP. The deputation briefly outlined the position of affairs in connection with the Board and port. It: was pointed out that owing to lack of shipping the revenue had shrunk from £1,400 in 1915-10 to £350 for the current year. In order to assist
the Board the deputation asked fo: an amendment to the Harbours Ac
to empower it to raise a loan to provide a steamer, the revenue from which, by regular trading, would assist the Board by increased revenue to overcome financial difficulties.
In reply, the Minister expressed sympathy with the Board in its present position. He pointed out the difficulties of legislating to amend the Act, giving permission to Harbour Boards’ to act as traders. He outlined a scheme by which the
Board could possibly assist privab enterprise, in the way of encourag ing shipping by guaranteeing inter esf on capital invested. He said In
