MEDDLING WITH TRADE.
the Mercantile Gazelle takes the Government to task this week in connection with the renewal of theeontract with the Sugar Company. It says: “It came as a surprise, not to say shock, to (lie whole community when it was published a week or two since that the Boaid of Trade had entered into a contract with the Sugar Company for futuredeliveries. No one can understand what the Government is doing meddling with sugar instead of leaving the merchants of New Zealand to arrange' for supplies, nor has anyone confidence in the ability of a Government official to do this sort of business with the same chance of coming out successfully as those who are in the trade. Whatever contract the Minister may have made, we are quit.e satisfied that it would take a much cleverer man than he is—whoever be may be — to score off the Sugar Company. Why the Government will persist in attempting to interfere in trade matters we uo not know, certainly their past handling of such busi-
ness has not produced any profound conviction that they possess special qualities for the handling of matters which are generally left to individual traders.”
