Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, NOVEMB. 24, 1921. UNITY AND PROGRESS.

“IT is hopeless (o expect Foxton to prosper unless their is broadness of view and unity of spirit among you.” Such was Dr. Maudl’s advice to those assembled to bid him an revoir around the festive board on Tuesday night. The doctor did not say anything unkind, but issued a timely warning—as lie would in a professional diagnosis. The advice is worth pondering. In small communities men with vision, unless backed by a strong personality, get disheartened. The “little Peddlingtons” resent innovation, and throw cold water on progressive schemes which make for progress and prosperity. The initial cost screens the broader view of subsequent benefits and prosperity. We would not like to say that Foxton is a town of little things, but it cannot be denied that there is room for improvement. There is need for a shaking up of the dry bones in connection with a forward policy. The Harbour Board needs a stronger local public backing. Greater interest should lie manifested in the completion of the water and drainage scheme, the supply of electric current for town and district should be discussed and promoted, the cutting up of the land for closer settlement is also of paramount importance. These matters can be discussed, and promoted, if the right public spirit is awakened. This eqn be done by assembling representatives of the various local bodies together in conference and deciding upon unity of action. Foxton has a bright future before it if the people will work together for the common good.
