Over 8,000 head of cattle perished in the recent blizzard in the Orange Free State. Buenos Aires police officers are now compelled to take a course of lessons in French. In the French Estimates for 1922 it is proposed to fix the number of employees of the State at (500,938, a decrease of about 132,000 as compared with 1921. Owing chiefly to emigration to the United States, the population of the Bahamas has decreased during the past 10 years from 55,944 to 53,031. Since 1919 Sweden has received, fed, and befriended 22,300 children from the war-distressed countries, and has spent over £1,000,000 on their behalf. The offer of a reward of £12,500 for information concerning Ambrose Small, the missing Toronto millionaire, which expired on September Ist, has been renewed. Gondolas, those fascinating
water-taxis of Venice, are to be put into commission on the Thames. A London builder is fabricating a fleet from real Venetian models.
The lights in the ehartroom of the Canadian Recruit, which was sunk in a collision near Quebec, could be seen burning for two hours after the sinking of the vessel. Burglars who entered a cottage near Godaiming stole a marriage certificate, a piece of wedding cake, a melodeon, a shaving outfit, and a bicycle.
According to scientists, sounds are diverted and lessened during rain. That is because the falling rain “twists” the sound waves from their course.
