CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
A special meeting of. the local Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday evening. Present: Messrs Uornblow (president), Rev. Walton, Admore, Smith, Pearson, Jno. Ross, Jack, Perreau, Christie, Whibley, and the secretary (DU’ Rangiheuea). Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor and Messrs Moorhouse and Furrie. CONFERENCE OF ASSOCIATED CHAMBERS.
Correspondence was read from the secretary of the Associated Chambers, enclosing agenda paper for the conference to be held at Christchurch on the 23rd and 24th insts. Mr A. N. Smith was appointed (he Chamber’s representative.
The remits appearing on the agenda paper were read and discussed, and the delegate instructed in reference to same. DEPARTURE OF DR. MANDL.
The president referred to the departure from Foxton of Dr Mandl, an ex-president of the Chamber. He referred, to Dr. Mandl’s active work on the Chamber during the strenuous period when the Chamber was battling for the rights of the local port, and the resuscitation of the Harbour Board, and his advocacy of a bonded store. The Chamber unanimously decided that it could not allow its ex-president to leave the town without an expression of its appreciation of the publice services lie had rendered. Tt was decided to entertain him at a smoke concert on Tuesday evening next, and to invite other local organisations to participate. It was decided not. to issue tickets for the function, but to extend a general invitation by advertisement to the public. Sub-committees were appointed to carry out the details. It was also decided to take occasion of the function to farewell Dir Hawke, local postmaster. GOVERNOR-GENER-AL’S VISIT.
The visit of their Excellencies the Govcr-General and Lady Jellicoe, to Foxton was referred to, and it was explained that a sub-commit-tee of the Borough Council was arranging the details in this connection. The tentative programme was a visit lo the school, civic reception and luncheon, and opening of the Anglican Sale of Work'. The time allotted to Foxton was an hour and a half’.
