KEEPING FLIES AWAY
We always looked upon flics as a nuisance, but now we recognise (hem as a great danger lo health, and are bent on ridding our houses of them, or should be, if we are wise. Flies dislike some smells; a bunch of fresh mignonette is said to keep flies from any room where it is, but a more scientific way I’o get rid of them is to set saucers of water here and there about the room, in which you have put a teaspoonful of formaline. These little pests object to draughts, so open all windows, and never allow any dark corners to become dusty and full of fluff, as this attracts flies. All rubbish heaps and ashpits should be kept in as hygienic state as possible, nothing being thrown away that is likely to decay readily. This should be burnt instead, and a disinfecting powder sprinkled freely will also help to get rid of flies of all kinds. Dip a small sponge in boiling wafer and place in a saucer, then .pour on it half a teaspoonful of oil of lavender, this will scent the room very pleasantly, but the odour will keep flies away. If any do come in they will, after a little time, become intoxicated, and so can easily be destroyed. This is much more satisfactory that fly papers, which are very objectionable as well as cruel. The sffonge should be moistened with oil about once a week, and with boiling water twice a day.
