ADENOIDS.

Adenoids are growths of tissue in the air passages at the back of the nostrils, and aslthey have no right to be there, they block up the air passages antf prevent normal breathing. . Consequently they lead to all sorts of illnesses. The chief, symptoms of adenoids is month breathing. The child is forced to breathe through his mouth because the growths or adenoids block up the opening leading from the nose into the throat. The child doesn’t breathe through his nose, because he /■an’t. Y r et the nose is intended for breathing. That’s why it contains its wonderful arrangement of tiny hairs which catch the particles of dust and germs which may be in the air and stop them from entering the throat and lungs.

When a child has adenoids and breathes through his mouth, these impurities go straight to the throat and lungs, and so the child is more liable to catch any infectious diseases, especially diphtheria and consumption. Other signs of adenoids are a stupid look, due to the mouth being always open, and sometimes deafness. Ofter the stupid look becomes a sign of real stupidity, because insufficient air being taken into the lungs, the blood is not properly pumped, and as blood is needed to nourish the brain, the brain is starved and the intelligence of the child decreases. Enlarged tonsils often go with adenoids, and are probably caused by cold and impure air being breathed through the mouth. See that your child exercises his jaws as a baby by gnawing at a bone or crust. Never let him have a comforter. Keep his nose clean. See that he gets plenty of fresh air. If, in spite of all your precautions, yon notice that your child shows signs of adenoids, take him at once to a doctor and get them removed before they get bigger.
