COST OF DEFENCE.
THE estimated expenditure of the Defence Departments this year is made up of the following items: — Naval defence, £335,782 (expended last year £48,029); N.Z. military forces and cadets, £467J)43 (expended last year £14,355)); noneffective services, £11,999 Expended last year £5,378); rifle clubs, £21,490 (expended last year £l,302); total, £851,740 (expended last year £579,734). The total expenditure in 1913-14 was £488,570, when no provision was made for aviation or the school of instruction. The total strength of the New Zealand Forces on June 301 b, 1921, was as follows: Permanent and temporary military personnel 832, territorial force . 23,188, cadets 23,581, rifle clubs 5,980.
