SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary meeting of the local State School Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Geo. Coley, W. Nye, Stevenson, C. Pearson, J. Ross, Perreau, F. Whibley, and the acting head teacher (Mr Broad). . Correspondence was read from the Board in reply re insurance on old school residence, stating that in the event of the building being destroyed the insurance would have to he paid to the Department. —The Committee decided to insure the building as per resolution passed at last meeting. From the Board, in reply re cheque for subsidy'which had gone astray, and forwarding a further cheque for.amount, payment of previous cheque being stopped. —Received. The Chairman reported that repairs had been effected to the old residence at a cost of £5 5s. —Action endorsed, and account passed for payment. The Chairman stated that an anonymous donor had given a donalion (per Mr Geo. Coley) of five guineas, for the erection of swings. The matter had been submitted to the acting-head master, who suggested that the donation Ite used for games material, as there was a danger of children meeting with accidents while swinging. Mr Coley said the donor had no objection to the donation being used for the purpose suggested by the head master. —Decided that the head master be empowered to expend the sum, and that the donor be accorded a vote of thanks. Accounts were passed for payment. Messrs Stevenson and Whibley were appointed visitors for the month. The headmaster’s report was submitted, and stated, inter alia: The school was visited on October 28th by the attendance officer, who expressed great dissatisfaction with the state qf the attendance at the school, describing it as one of the worst in the district. The following figures speak for themselves: Week ending September 30th, 37(», roll number 420; October 7th 380, x'oll number 424; October 14th 3 id, roll number 420; October 21st 300, roll number 423; October 28th 355, roll number 423. Mr F. Roydhousc, physical instructor, . visited the school on November 3rd. Minor repairs effected during the month were enumerated, and those requiring attention set out. The school observed a holiday on Labour Day. The Christmas holidays commence on Tuesday afternoon, December 20th. The proficiency examination will be held on December Dili, when all the classes below Standard VI. will have a holiday. The annual examination is now being held. Dn the results of the examination, taken in conjunction with the general character of the pupils’' work during the year, promotions will lie made b\ the head teacher. The recent Inspectors’ examination report was tallied.
If was explained that one ot the causes which had militated against school attendance was sickness. The Committee expressed'its appreciation of the acting-head master’s efforts to bring the school up to a slate of proficiency, which meant extra work as a result of the unfortunate sickness and absence of the head master.
