A letter was read from the Harbour Board, in reply, stating that the Beach Road was under the control of the Manawatu County Council. A letter was also received from the Manawatu County Council, slating that the culvert complained of had been repaired, but that the Council could not see its way at present to carry out any improvement to the cutting, but that the engineer would inspect and report on the ma tier.
Mr Smith moved, and Mr Perreau seconded, a motion, which, after some discussion was amended and passed as follows (Mr Whibley dissenting): That the Harbour Board be informed that as the Board receives the rents from all sections at the Beach, and as the Manawatu County Council has stated that owing to restricted revenue from the locality, it cannot carry out the work, will the Board subsidise any voluntary contributions in order that this necessary work be consummated.
The President pointed out that lhe Board was not responsible for . the road maintenance or construe- " (ion. Board members had expressed the opinion that if improvements were to be effected those interested should assist themselves by either contributing towards the work, or forming a separate rating area. The County Council had expended £lO,000 on the road, of which amount the Borough Council had contrihut--ed £1,200. The rates from the locality only realised a few pounds, plus a maintenance charge of 12s (id per annum from each lessee, of which latter the' Borough Council received half. The annual rents to the Board were small. Some of the residents at the rear of the foreshore had no roadway to their holdings, He thought those who were to benefit should contribute a share to the cost of improvements. The County Engineer should be asked to give an estimate of the work, and an endeavour made to proportion the cost of same equitably. It was resolved to write to the County Council and ask that the engineer be authorised to provide an estimate of the work, on receipt of which steps be taken to on list the financial support of Beach residents in order to have the work carried, out. FACILITATING DELIVERY OF GOODS. The question of delay in gelling delivery of goods arriving by steamer was discussed, and it was resolved to write (lie local slationmaster, asking that steps be taken to facilitate the delivery of goods, as delay caused inconvenience and loss to tradespeople. HAWKERS’ LICENSES. Mr Smith introduced a motion asking the Borough Council to give favourable consideration, when amending its by-laws, to increase hawkers’ licenses. After some discussion it was decided to hold over the motion for further consideration at next meeting. GENERAL. The quest ion of appointing a delegate to attend the annual conference of Associated Chambers was held over pending receipt of the agenda.'paper. On the motion of Mr Ross, the Secretary was authorised to forward a letter of congratulation to Mr Ilawke, local postmaster, on his promotion, and to express the Chamber’s appreciation of his courtesy in the discharge of his duty. Several minor matters were dealt v with, and the meeting rose.
