Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1921. ASSISTING THE BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
WE hope the local Beautifying Society will not he discouraged at the Council’s refusal to supplement the Society’s, funds for maintenance work. The Society is anxious to expend its money on beautifying work of a permanent nature, and has set aside a fund for this purpose. We may mention that £250 is ear-marked for a pavilion in Easton Park, and a further sum will he required for planting trees; it is proposed to lay down jmths and erect concrete steps at the cemetery, and improvements are wanted at Victoria Park, such as suitable shelter hedges, etc. There will not be sufficient to complete such works without making a further appeal to the public for supplementing funds. It will be seen, therefore, that unless the Council undertakes a fair share of its linancial responsibility in the matter of maintenance and cleaning-up, it will kid the Society’s enthusiasm. r £he Council cannot assist the Society out of the general fund, but there is no reason why it cannot do so out of revenue derived from reserves.
