YESTERDAY’S STORM
Extremely unfavourable weather prevailed for the holiday yesterday, a southerly storm breaking over the district ,and continuing throughout the day. The weather was apparently general throughout the province, and considerable damage was done in some respects. The heavy gale was responsible for much delay to telegraph and telephone communication. Wires were down south of Levin and north of Foxton, and communication with Palmerston and Wellington was for the greater part of the day cut olf. Lines were still greatly interrupted this morning, but should be completely restored during the day. • THE MANAWATU IN FLOOD. The Postmaster advises us that Woodville reported at 8.10 p.m. yesterday that the bridgekeeper at Ngawapurau reported “River in heavy flood, flooding low-lying country.” Tiraumea reports: “River overflowing banks; highest for some time.” Woodville reported at 9 o’clock this morning: “River eight feet above normal. Not raining at present.”
