BOWLING

Yesterday the Shannon Bowling Club was favoured with fine weather for the opening of their green. Four rinks journeyed from Foxton, and had a very enjoyable afternoon’s play. Levin was also represented by two rinks. Owing to heavy rain during the preceding night, the green was somewhat heavy, but nevertheless was quite playable. Shannon green this year gives great promise, and reflects credit on members who have made great endeavours to put it in tip-top order. Since last season considerable improvements have been made to the property, particularly, in the matter of the erection of a pavilion, which is a model structure, and was the subject of very favourable comment by visiting bowlers. Mr Murray, this year’s president, in extending a welcome to visitors, mentioned the rapid progress the Shannon Club has made during the last three years, th'6 membership increasing threefold during that period. He drew attention to the improvements made in the Club’s property, and made mention of the debt of gratitude due to the ladies for the manner in which they had worked to make the scheme possible. He also paid a tribute to the enthusiastic manner in which Mr Gunning, particularly, had worked in the interests of the Club. A very tasty afternoon tea was provided by the ladies, which was much appreciated by those present.

The following are the results of the games in which Foxton players took part:—.

The official opening of the Palmerston Club’s green also took place yesterday afternoon, when visitors were present from (he Pahiatua, Foxton, Terrace End and Manawatu Clubs. The president of the club (Mr F. Needham), in declaring the green open, extended a very hearty welcome to the visitors. Mrs Needham rolled the first bowl. Dr. Paterson (Pallialual, on behalf of the visitors, returned thanks for the hearty manner in which they had been received. Owing to a heavy shower about a quarter to live, the last two or three heads in each game could not be played.
