NEW SUGAR CONTRACT.
RETAIL PRICE 4:{d PER LB
The Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. E. P. Lee) made a statement in the House of Representatives that a new contract had been made with the Colonial Sugar Refining Company on Ist August on similar terms to the last for the supply and refining of raw sugar, but the price paid would be £22 12s (Id per ton, f.o.b. Fiji, instead of £35 10s. This would enable the public to be supplied retail at; 4 :j d per lb. from 7th November. The price was to be lower than in any other country. Last year’s contract resulted in no loss to the Government, despite the strike and the coal shortage. The new confect assured supplies till 30th .Tune, 1022, and a sufficient supply had been accumulated to meet the anticipated requirements of the jam season. Tho public would be able to obtain supplies in 701 b. bags without rationing.
