TRAMWAY REPORT.

The tramway manager reported ■that during the month of September the chief items of traffic were: Merchandise, 12!) tons; butter and cheese, 105 tons; minerals and manure, 170 tons; timber, 23,800£t.; fares amounted to £4 17s 2d. The accounts showed a debit balance of £59 11s 7d for the month’s working, but included in expenses was £OB 18s for repairs and alterations to one of the locomotives, which were well under way. The rolling stock had again been inspected by the waggon inspector (New Zealand Railways), and a number of repairs would have to be effected. The 300 tons of rails ordered were on the Kemuora, and were due in Wellington on the Bth inst. He had been endeavouring to get them loaded direct off the Kemuera on to the Kennedy for Foxton, thus saving double handling, but had been informed that this coiild not be done, and the rails would have to be landed on the wharf. Particulars were being obtained as to cost of transporting the rails to Foxton. —The report was adopted. The Engineer reported: The plate-laying is delayed for the time being owing to the delay in obtaining sleepers, and also bolts. Threequarters of a mile of 401 b. rails are laid, but we have not yet been able to o.btain the necessary quantity of bolts to finish this section completely. The tramline leading from Pu-1-oiiui siding to the stone-crusher will require approximately 200 yds. of crushed ballast to put in in fir&tclass order, and to prevent the line from creeping. Tlie tram bridge opposite Mr Grace’s is not in a satisfactory condition, and should be replaced with a concrete bridge, estimated to cost £2OO. During last month Cr. Fagan and myself inspected a demonstration of a wag-gon-loader, and its working capacity for loading metal into motor lorries. With sonic improvements, this machine will he very useful for loading large quantities of metal, but I understand that a Christchurch firm is constructing a much stronger and more efficient machine, which will be placed on the market in a few weeks time. —Adopted.
