A NON-STOP WORKMAN.
UNDAUNTED BY DISMISSALS
' The municipal, police, and medical authorities at Johannesburg are at their wits’ end to know what to do with a man who ; has been working fcr the Johannesburg municipality for 14 months without payment, notwithstanding repeated dismissals, a caution by the magistrate, and an order for “observation” by a doctor.
The man,'whose name is Smith, works on the roads, and his service dates from 1909. On November 9th, 1919, the Works Committee recommended that he be retired, and he was duly paid off with a bonus. Smith was arrested on March 16th for “interfering with the councils work’,” and placed under medical observation. Apparently the doctor was unable to uphold the surmise that a man who won’t stop working, even though he is not paid, must be mentally deranged, and four days later Smith was back at his job again. A municipal report said: The de-puty-commissioner of police writes stating that the public prosecutor cannot suggest any charge that can be laid against Smith, and that the police can do nothing further. Some municipal Solomon then suggested that a woman’s wit-sho-uld be-brought to bear upon the case, and the matter has been referred to the Deputy-Mayor, Mrs Fitzgerald. In the meantime, the undaunted Smith is still working.
