ASIATIC IMMIGRANTS
It is incorrect to premise that there is an increasing influx of Chinese and Asiatics (said the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, in reply to a question in the House by Mr Poland). 11l fact, that has been rendered impossible by the Act of 1920. The number of Chinese and Hindus who entered New Zealand during 1920 was: Chinese, 1,029; Hindus, as nearly as can be ascertained, 220. For eight months of 1921, during which time the new Act has been in operation, the numbers were: Chinese, 28; Hindus, 84. The majority of these Hindus were passengers by the Ganges to Suva en route to New Zealand, when the new Act came into force, and accordingly 'they could not be prevented from landing.
