VALEDICTORY

When the local S.A. friends of Mr Scollay, local Government hemp grader, heard that their esteemed comrade ha_d received notification of his immediate transfer to Auckland, they arranged a farewell social in his honour, for Thursday evening last. In the meantime, Mr Scollay received a further notification cancelling the previous one, and at present does not know where his location will be. Ilis friends, however, determined not to cancel their arrangements, and the social took place as arranged. Keen regret was expressed by several speakers at Mr Scollay’s departure, tinged, however, with a feeling of hope that the Department, in its reorganising scheme, might yet decide to allow their officer to retain his residence in Foxton.

Among those present were a number of citizens and musical friends of the guest. On behalf of the Army, Captain Tong presented Bandmaster Scollay with a safety razor as a token of esteem, and expressed the hope of all present that he would still remain in Foxton. Brief speeches were also made by Messrs Bullard, P. W. Brown and Hornblow. Mr Scollay thanked the speakers for their kindly expressions, and for the token of their esteem. During the evening items were contributed by Mrs Stewart, Mr Osborne and Mrs Bullard (vocal

duet), Mr Colder, instrumental quartette by Messrs Betty, Osborne, Walls and Goldcr, duel (instrumental) Messrs Betty and Walls, vocal quartette Mr and Mrs Bullard and Mr and Mrs Osborne. A tasty supper was provided by the ladies.
