RECAPTURE OF A PRISONER
Auckland, Sept. 24
The escaped prisoner, George Caffrey, alias Johnstone, was captured by Constable Clifford in an hotel this afternoon. The constable was in the bar of the hotel when he noticed a man answering Caffrey’s description at the counter. The man was wearing a brown suit, and was obviously sure that lie was clear of the police. Constable Clifford went up to him and invited him to return to the police station. He protested, and Constable Allen was called, in. Caffrey then submitted and went with them.
Caffrey made a sensational escape from a moving train on Saturday, 27th August. The train was near Parnell tunnel, when the prisoner, who is a quarter-caste Norfolk Islander, jumped through the lavatory window. The constable escorting him went back to the tunnel when the escape was noticed, but the prisoner was clear, and was not seen during the three weeks preceding his recapture to-day.
