BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY
A meeting of the Finance Committee of the above was held on Thursday afternoon. Present: Messrs Moorhouse (chairman), Hornblow, Poole, and Trueman (treasurer). The treasurer submitted a statement of receipts and expenditure, which disclosed unexpended funds amounting to approximately £550. The treasurer stated that the amount authorised to be expended on the old cemetery, viz., £3OO, had not reached that limit. Had the details of Mr Black’s scheme been carried out, such as the laying down of paths and garden plots, a further £OO or £7O would have been required. The sub-committee, however, decided to hold over this work. The cost of the gate, which had yet to be procured and erected, would more than exceed the unexpended balance of the £3OO. The Chairman said it was a matter for congratulation that the cost of the work had been kept down to such reasonable limits. He had been of the opinion that the subcommittee had “over-run the constable.” The carrying out of the work on the whole was highly satisfactory, and the public should be more than satisfied with results. Accounts in connection with the work done were ' scrutinised and passed for payment. The Chairman was deputed to confer with the contractor for the wall in reference to certain portions of the work uncompleted.
The question of placing the unexpended funds on fixed deposit was discussed, and it was decided that £SOO be so placed until such time a.s further work could be carried out.
