BETWEEN £3,000 AND £I,OOO
RAISED.
The “Help the Mothers” in aid of the establishment of a bt. Helen’s Hospital in Palmerston N, for :tho Palmerston Hospital districtwas brought to a close at Palmerston on Friday last, and resulted in between £3,000 and £4,000 being laised. The objective was £IO,OOO, and had the whole district taken up the effort with a proper understanding of the necessity for such an institution, there is no doubt the objective would have been reached. As it was, the only districts to display enthusiasm were Palmerston and the Manawatu County, including Foxton. The honour of raising the largest amount, £957 7s Id, fell to this district, of which amount Sir James Wilson donated £SOO. As previously mentioned, Foxton contributed £IOB, with indirect amounts which brought its total up to nearly £l5O.
Following are the details of the amounts collected by the chief sections: —M anawatu Spadesmen, £957 7s Id; Western Engineers, £092 17s 3d; Northern Trenchers, £063 9s Gd; Eastern Ditchers £455 19s lOd; Southern Pickmen, £175 2s; Ivairanga Diggers, £77 10s; Pohangina Sappers, £32 10s. The other sections put in smaller amounts, the total being £3,001 13s. '!'he winning queen and princess were Miss McKelvie (Carnarvon) and Miss White (Rongotea). The Western queen and princess were Misses Mavis Stokes and Gwen Trotty. The Eastern, Miss Preston and Miss Rodgers; Northern, Miss Zalouni uid Miss Knowles; Southern, Miss Whalley and Miss Z. Schilerike; Kairanga, Miss Tcale and Miss Martin.
