LAD DROWNED IN HUT RIVER

A sad drowning fatality occurred in the Hutt River, near Lower Hutt, on Sunday, the victim being a boy named Jack Napier Wickham, aged thirteen years. Deceased and his younger brother, aged nine, were recovering driftwood from the river, in which there was a strong current, While the elder boy was hauling a log by means of a rope, on to a loose shingle-bed, the wood was suddenly carried away by the swift waters, and the boy was dragged into the swollen river. An alarm was immediately given by the younger boy, and every effort was made, but without avail. The body was subsequently found near the mouth of the river.
