THE SALVATION ARMY

The Self-Denial appeal in connection with the Salvation Army has begun. A great deal of the Army’s success is due to this one great annual effort to raise funds to carry on its work of mercy anil benevolence. From year to year the amount collected has risen in a most striking fashion, thus clearly indicating that the work has the increasing support of the public, which is one of the best testimonials ilia ft work of this character can receive. The intelligent and scrupulous way in which the funds are disbursed is a factor in the situation that commends the appeal to every section of the community. The Salvation Army has, as an organisation, given to the religious and philanthropic world many examples of what can be done by fixity of purpose and unity of effort, and among them none is more striking than its annual week of Prayer and Self-de-nial. Apart from the local work, lhe Army is certainly one of the largest missionary organisations in heathen lands, where it has met with a success little imagined by people who arc used to different methods in the conversion of nonChristian nations. Donations in aid of the work of the Army will be received by the officer in charge, or any authorised collectors. We wish them every success in their appeal.
