A PRISONER ESCAPES
ROXBOROUGH AT LARGE,
Charles Henry Roxborough, who 1 '* was to have appeared at the Magistrate’s Court, Palmerston North, on Wednesday to answer a charge of stealing at Tokomaru, on June 21st, a suitcase and contents, valued at £l7 ss, made a, sensational dash for liberty a few hours before the case was due to take place. Roxboi'ough had been in the lockup since June 9th, and appeared quite unconcerned with everything. At the time of his escape Roxborough was pacing (he floor of the cell yard when he asked for a drink of water from the constable on duty. Whilst the constable turned to attend to prisoner’s requirements, the latter rushed through the door, and then securely locked it on the constable. The imprisoned constable, being at a disadvantage, allowed Roxborough to get a good start in the race for freedom. By the time the constable had freed himself, and had reported the escape, the prisoner got. well out of sight by the time llie search was commenced.
Roxborough is well known to the
police as a ‘ls'irpep
police as a “slippery” customer, for on a previous occasion he distracted a constable’s attention and immediately seized a bicycle near by and, made good his escape. He was later captured by Constable Campagnolo, Dannevirkc, after a crosscountry chase.
