Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, AUGUST 30, 1921. LOCAL CASES OF DISTRESS.

REPRESENTATIVES of: the various churches, in conjunction will) the local Dorcas Bociety, have uniit'fl to raise fund" to assist any local cases of distress. I’oxton. in common wirlt all other communities, has its share of misfortune ami di-tress, and in the past such cases havc/been attended to and relief given by the Charitable Aid Board and the various church f tut her. the Stole makes provision through every Hospital Board for the relic! of the sick and the dcsliiure. and an officer is appointed whose duly it is to enquire into all snob cases, and render such assistance as the ease warrant-. The funds .for such purposes are a charge on the rates. Iti- necessary, however, in dealing with indigent ease-' .for the officer to (‘Xerei.se a wise discretion, but in no instance has-a deserving ease been neglected, and in this particular Foxtail, in proportion to it- population, has received more assistance than any other centre in the hospital district. This may he due to the fuel that Fox ton is an mdiisriai centre, and people pro -cm hen; from oilier parts to find employment, failing which they are left -irandod. TJtore is. lit Ho or no distress among residents of long standing. Ihe point is that no indigent person or family need .suffer for lack of toon or medical attention if the ease is reported. On the other hand, it may he that some cases of distress are not officially reported for one reason or another, and these are attended to by charitably disposed people and church organisations, who provide ninny of the little creature comforts and extras that may not he provided through official channels. We desire to make it quite clear that no eases of distress reported locally in the pa-t have been neglected, and that future cases, when reported, will lie immediately dealt with. It would be impossible, and an unfair tax on the community, ■for any local organisation to take over the work of the Charitable Aid department, but there is room for such an organisation to supplement the relief provided by the institution, and for this reason we hope the public will assist the united effort of the churches in this connection.
