COAL FREIGHT ECONOMY.
MR. W. BOCK told the Foxton Harbour Board at its meeting on Thursday that recently the Foxton Borough Council had obtained a load of coal, per s.s. Kennedy, from Westport, and had saved £OO in freight charges, or 7s per ton less than would have l been the cost if transported by rail. The saving being so great, Mr Bock could not understand why the Railway Department should continue to bring railway coal to these parts per rail. Some time ago the Department.stated that’ they could not get boats. Mr T. J. Claphanfs motion that Mr McVilly he again communicated with on the subject was agreed to. In view of tho proposed cut in the railway service, sis a means to economy, it seems strange that the Railway Department should spend hundreds of pounds iu coal haulage which could be saved to the State if the coal were shipped through the local port, We direct the attention of Mr Newman to this fact.
