THE HEMP MARKET.
The High Commissioner’s cable, dated 20th inst., reads: — Manila, better demand early this week, but quieter at close. J grade, August-Oetober shipment, sold at £3B; sellers’ present quotations, June-August to August-Oetober shipments, £37 15s. The Philippine authorities have prohibited grading after the end of this month of grades J to M, but so far the market is not affected, the feeling being that supplies spot and af 1 oat, plus amount graded, will be sufficient for some time. Manila output for Ist January to 15th August was 462,000 hales, against 743,000 last year. This reduced production appears sufficient for the world's present consumption. Bet - ter inquiry for New Zealand, hut offers scarce, present quotations, sellers high-points £37 ton, buyers, fair £34 to £34 10s, August-Oetober shipment. Stocks Great Britain 31st July, 682 tons, against 472 last year.
