WERAROA DEFEATS FOXTON JUNIORS BY 5 TO NIL,

AND WINS NORTHERN CHAM-

PIONSHIP.

A good deal of interest centred in the meeting of the Weraroa and Fox ton juniors at Levin on Saturday, the game deciding the champion ship of the northern division. The conditions were perfect, there being an entire absence of wind, and the ground in capital order. There was a large crowd of spectators. As an exhibition of Rugby, the game was disappointing, says the Chronicle. The conditions were favourable to a fast, open display, hut most of the play was confined to the forwards. Foxton made a few feeble attempts at the open game, but AYcraroa on the other hand took every opportunity of throwing (he ball about, and in this respect Lester behind the serum whipped out the ball in splendid style. The subsequent passing, however, failed in nearly every rush to gain the attackers much advantage, as the ball travelled straight across ttu- fieJd, Adkin and Jackson on the wings being the only pair to break’ fresh ground occasionally. Repeated efforts, which should have got Weraroa nearer their opponents’ line, if not a try cm one or two occasions, went amiss in this way. The only score of the day came, to Weraroa through Jackson following up well aud charging a return kick by a Foxton back. The ball striking Jackson and rebounding, he followed through, and fielding nicely, ran round behind the posts. McLeavey added' the extra points. AYcraroa s—Foxton5 —Foxton 0. The al forwards made the game fast, ’ ancUvere too good for the opposition, their rushes taking the game within striking distance of the goal several times, but Foxton battled doggedly, and staved off the attacks successfully. On the day, Weraroa had easily the best of the game, " an d deserved their win and the northern championship. Mr AY. Thomson was the referee.

The Wanderers and Shannon junior match was won by the latter ** j, v 14 to 3, but the-game was not

treated very seriously. Shannon had easily the best of things.

The New South Wales team defeated Wairarapa, at Masterton on Saturday, by 34 points to 5.

Wanganui defeated Manawatu, at Palmerston on Saturday, by 11 to

Concerning the remarks reputed to have been made by Mr G. H. Bennett, manager qf the Springboks, with reference to the South Africans’ reception in Australia, Mr H. Bosward, manager of the New South Wales team, has received the following telegram from Mr Bennett: ‘(With reference to your remarks at Gisborne, please accept my assurance that neither I nor anv member of my team have ever made any statements derogatory to Sydney hospitality or sportsmanship. We had the time of our lives in Australia, and appreciate all that was done for us there.” Signed, Bennett, manager of the South African team.
