FOOTBALL

Before the New Zealand team for the.second Test with the Springboks is finally chosen, the selectors require to have a medical certificate as to the fitness of each player. It will be remembered that one of the conditions of play during the Springboks’ tour is that no player injured shall be replaced.

Included in the Wellington B reps, now on tour is a nippy and clever three-quarter, in the person of Roy Bullard, son of Mr W. E. Bullard, and an ex-Fox ton schoolboy. “Roy” is only 19 years of age, but a born toe-bailer. He inherits the rugby strain from his father, who was a member of the crack Poneke team in the days of Ellison, Sid. Nicholls and Co. Roy was playing fourth-grade football a couple of years back, but has been quickly promoted to first-grade as a member of the Athletics first firteen. If he keeps on as he is going, there is every prospect of his winning an All Black jersey within the next two seasons.

Speaking at a public reception at Gisborne, Mr Bosward, the manager of the New South Wales team, refuted the adverse statements attributed to the Springboks regarding Australian sportsmanship. He expressed surprise at the comments which followed the Springboks’ departure from Australia, where he claimed that hospitality and the finest sporting spirit Was displayed towards the South Africans.

In conversation with a member of the Springboks, team after the match on Wednesday, the “Herald” representative was informed that tho game against Mnnawa!lu-Horo-whenun was one of the hardestfought of the provincial matches, and compared favourably with any of them.
