CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir. —When I saw the bruised face of my old friend Charles Dransfield, and heard that the old man had been battered without provocation under cover of darkness, by one or more cowards, it made my blood boil with indignation. I want to give the police credit, Sir, for the good work they are doing in putting down blackguardism and law-breaking, and I hope that they will be successful in yet apprehending Charlie’s assailants, and if they do that they will be tried before the magistrate. The assault on an old man over 80 only missed murder by the narrowest of margins. Another thing which surprised me, and many of your readers, was the fine of 50s imposed on the man guilty of striking a woman. This sort of punishment with a fortnight to pay is a record. I wonder if the J’s,P. would be satisfied to allow their wives or daughters’ faces to be slapped without provocation for 50s. If this sort of thing is not put down with a stronger* hand, it will not be safe to allow our wives or daughters to go out after dark without a bodyguard. Thanking you in anticipation. — Yours, etc., JUSTICE.
