THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
JULY GRADING RETURNS
The following return for hemp, tow and stripper slips has been received from the Department of Agriculture for the month of July: Hemp.—The total number of bales graded was 2,459, as compared with 5,533 for the corresponding period of last year, a decrease of 3,044 bales. For the 12 months ended 31st July, 1921, the number of bales graded was 67,776, as compared with 94,622 for the previous 12 months, a decrease of 26,846 bales. Tow. —The total number of bales graded was 391, as compared with 965 for the same month of last year, a decrease of 574 bales. I* or the 12 months ended 31st July, 1921, the number of bales graded was 15,225, as compared with 21,000 for the previous 12 .months, a decrease of 5,783 bales. Stripper Slips.—3b bales graded, as compared with 115 for the same month of last year. For the 12 months ended 31st July, 1921, the number of bales graded was 2,180, ns compared with 202 for the previous 12 months, an increase of 1,878 bales. The detail particulars of . the grading of hemp at each port is as follows: —
50 bales were graded fine at Picton, and 137 bales rejected at Wellington. No bales were condemned. Tho following shows the number of hales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parentheses:— Fine 50 (16), good fair 391 (1,240), high fair 1,134 (2,861), _ fair 637 (1,194), common 110 (164), rejected 137 (28), condemned nil (nil) a decrease of 3,044 bales.
The following shows the number of bales graded at each port: Auckland 257, Wellington 1,378, I’oxton 555, Picton 450, Blenheim 2, Bluff 217. The following are the details of the tow graded: —
36 bales at Wellington were condemned.
Tho following shows the number of bales in each brade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parentheses: —lst grade 73 (297), 2nd grade 282 (497), 3rd grade nil (162), condemned 36 (9) —a decrease of 5(4 bales.
The number of bales graded in ci.ch port is-as follows: —Auckland 33, Wellington 225, Foxton 65, Picton 18, Bluff 50.
Stripper Slips.—36 hales were graded Ist grade at Wellington. No bales were condemned. Total, 36, a decrease of 79 hales on that of the corresponding month of last year.
