WATER AND DRAINAGE SCHEME.
ENGINEERS’ REPORT
The engineers, Messrs Cliinie anfl Son, submitted the following report on the water and drainage scheme at last night’s Council meeting:— “Subsequently to our last icpoit (23rd ult.), the sewers in Easton Street (east and west), in Hulke Street, in Watson and Clyde Streets, were completed on the 4t.h inst. In natural sequence, the next sewer to he laid would have been Main Street, west from Cook Street to Clyde Street. Owing to object ions lodged in this section, we suggested the Main Street east, sewer—Cook Street to Police Station—he proceeded with. Your Water and Drainage Committee sanctioned this, but upon ordering the pipes in the meantime, found that there were not sufficient 6-inch pipes ready to warrnnt. opening up this section. A length of six chains of 0-inch sewer being clear on Main Street west, from Wharf Street northwards, we opened on this section on 2nd inst. The inclement weather has impeded progress, hut we should have finished by to-night as far as we can go, pending hearing objections. "W c ask your endorsement of pushing on with this sewer to-morrow, in accojdance with the Municipal Corporations Act. . The' general order of sewer-laying from now on should he: Completion of section A barf Street to Clyde Street; construction section Family Hotel to Wharf Street; then Cook Street and Main Street east sewer, for which pipes are now coming to hand readily. Re manhole covers: Ten more have been delivered, and ten on order should arrive shortly.” Decided that the water and drainage engineer’s report re suggested work he adopted,' and That statistical returns he referred to the Water and Drainage Committee for consideration.
